SHAFTER, Calif. -- As more and more people learn new details about the latest swine flu vaccine, others were flooding the Public Health Office in Shafter to get the more common seasonal flu shot.Nurses said the flu shot is recommended for everyone, especially kids and the elderly. At the clinic, nurses were also administering a FluMist. They said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention believes that the mist is just as effective as the shot.
Health officials said often times they give the mist to healthy people ages 2 to 49 in order to save some of the shots for elderly people who may have respiratory problems.Either way, nurses recommend getting the seasonal flu and encourage getting the swine flu vaccine when it becomes available. To prevent you from spreading the flu, nurses stress that you cover your cough, confine yourself to your home if you are sick and wash your hands.Health officials said no matter what you may have heard about the flu shot, it does not cause you to get the flu. Instead, your body begins to develop the antibody that attacks the flu virus and those may be the symptoms you may be feeling.
