DELANO, Calif. -- The Delano Police Department has new programs coming its way to help fight drunken driving. The DPD was awarded over $60,000 from the Office of Traffic Safety to keep drunk drivers off the road.Commander Lynn Venables said some of the funds will go to a hot sheet program for officers to concentrate on repeat DUI offenders.
The OTS reported that drunken driving is one of America’s deadliest crimes. In 2008 over 11,700 people died in highway crashes involving a drunk driver. Now, motorcycle accidents are on the rise. The grant is aimed at curbing some of those accidents by having more officers on the road. The OTS said there has been a 9 percent reduction in deaths from 2007 to 2008.They hope is that this grant will help keep that trend going by getting drunken drivers off the roads.
