McFARLAND, Calif. -- The city of McFarland and the Board Of Supervisors have officially come up with an agreement for re-payment for the Kern County Sheriff's contract and both have settled the claim that was filed against the city back in September for failure to pay for sheriff’s services.McFarland city officials said they will have to submit two payments a year in the amount of $123,642.87 for the next 10 years. That amount is calculated to pay off their sheriff's debt of $2,059,300.
The McFarland Police Department has about six weeks to go before they officially hit the streets.Their police chief David Frazer said they have hired three sergeants, two police officers, two more officers will start next week and another two are in background checks right now.McFarland city officials said that their own police department can save up to $500,000 in the first year as opposed to keeping a contract with the sheriff’s department.Frazer said the sheriff's department is doing their part to help them take over. The biggest challenge the McFarland Police Department is facing is establishing their dispatch. So far, they are looking at the city of Shafter to help them out.Frazer said on the positive side, their fleet of patrol cars is looking just the way he wants it.In an effort to bring pride to the city, Frazer has included McFarland’s logo on the back of the car and on the front of it they display their department logo both in English and Spanish.Frazer said his officers will take advantage of the cars in the weeks to come to conduct community surveys so he can get a better understanding about what the city needs from the officers.
