Bomb Like Device Shuts Down Shopping Center
A Suspicious Device Turns Out to Be Nothing, But Intended to Alarm

WASCO, Calif. -- A suspicious device in Wasco turned out to be nothing, but it was intended to catch someone's eyes.The Kern County Sheriff's Bomb Squad was called out shortly before 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon after a suspicious device was found inside a newsstand near the SaveMart along the 2500 block of Highway 46. T he bomb squad removed the device from the newsstand and evacuated the shopping center.Eventually the device was determined to not contain explosives. It is described as a small plastic device with red lights and batteries attached to it. The sheriff's office says it was made to resemble an improvised explosive device.
The sheriff's department will begin a criminal investigation and encourages the public to contact law enforcement whenever they see something suspicious like this.The shopping center was closed down for about two hours during the incident.Anyone with information is urged to contact the sheriff's department.
