WASCO, Calif. -- Through investigation, the Kern County Sheriff Office Bomb Squad investigators determined the device in the Wasco Save Mart newspaper machine was placed there by a contractor associated with the Bakersfield Californian as a means of attracting attention to the new machines located in the shopping center.Related
Bomb Like Device Shuts Down Shopping Center According to the KCSO, the device was rudimentary in its design and appearance. It had batteries held on by plastic tape and flashing LED lights.
The Kern County Sheriff's Bomb Squad was called out shortly before 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon after a suspicious device was found inside a newsstand near the SaveMart along the 2500 block of Highway 46. The bomb squad removed the device from the newsstand and evacuated the shopping center.Investigation determined that there was no intent by the contractor that the device would be mistaken for anything other than an “attention getter” to sell newspapers from his machines.
