23 Teachers May Be Cut From School District

SHAFTER, Calif. -- Monday night, teachers sounded off over the proposed job cuts to the Richland School District, and on Tuesday, ABC23's north county reporter Crystal Figueroa spoke with the superintendent, Ken Bergevin, who said the district could see dozens of teachers go.The Richland School District adopted a resolution to cut 23 teaching positions Monday night.Of those 23 teachers, 16 are elementary teachers but those are only potential layoffs.
Bergevin said by law, the school district has to notify teachers by March 15 if their job could be on the chopping block.The state is slated to cut $2.4 billion from education from next year’s budget, which is a loss of $2.3 million for the district.The district employs 162 teachers, 10 percent of them could be cut resulting in larger class sizes.
