SHAFTER, Calif. -- Animals in Shafter are getting a second leash on life thanks to a brand-new 6,000-square foot shelter. For two years, the city of Shafter has been working to build a state-of-the-art animal shelter to replace its current one that's made up of trailers.Animal control workers say they needed a bigger space because the number of strays continues to grow.
At the new shelter, dogs will have kennels with access to the outdoors from an air-conditioned room.Workers will also segregate cats from dogs and animals who are up for adoption from those with behavior problems. The shelter opened in December and workers hope the new facility will welcome people in a way that will motivate them to adopt a pet.Workers said they always welcome donations, but chew toys and blankets are especially appreciated. If you’d like to visit the new shelter it is located on South Shafter Avenue between Burbank and San Diego streets.
