Since then the department has been working to get clearance from the Department of Justice to handle its own 911 calls.City Manager Bob Wilburn said Wednesday that procedures are going according to plan and a 911 dispatch system could launch in as little as 30 days.Currently, the Sheriff's Department handles six to nine 911 calls a day from McFarland.Wilburn said, by law, the Sheriff's Department has to offer 911 dispatch services. Undersheriff Marty Williamson said the department will do that as long as McFarland needs, but if McFarland doesn’t stand on its own soon, the Sheriff's Department could start charging a fee.McFarland is still paying off the debt for previous sheriff's services.Wilburn said he will do everything he can to get this project done on time.
