POSTED: 9:06 am PST March 8, 2010
UPDATED: 9:32 am PST March 8, 2010

The Kern County Sheriff's Department was searching for a man who they said shot his neighbor during an argument.

Around 8:45 p.m. on March 5, deputies from the KCSD arrived to a home in the 30000 block of Rodriguez Street, just south of Shafter.

Deputies said they found Roger Villalobos, 39, unconscious and suffering from a single gunshot wound.

He was airlifted to Kern Medical Center and is in critical condition.

Because of the seriousness of Villalobos' injuries, homicide detectives were called out to investigate.

The homicide detectives said they found that Villalobos had been involved in an altercation with his neighbor, who was identified as 23-year-old Joshua Samarripas.

Samarripas's shot Villalobos and then fled, deputies said.

On March 6, around 5:45 p.m., investigators from the Sheriff's office were continuing their investigation into the shooting.

Investigators said they spoke with Samarripas who agreed to meet with them.

Deputies said they met with Samarripas and he provided a complete statement and cooperated with the investigators.

Once Samarripas provided a statement, he directed investigators to the firearm that was used in the shooting, deputies said.

Samarripas was then released pending further investigation.

There are no other outstanding suspects at this time. The investigation is continuing.
