Azita Nikooei's life was cut short back in Sept. 2004, but Monday, her close friends celebrated her life.

Friends gathered at Valley Bible Fellowship Church to celebrate her life.

Nikooie was killed at the age of 29. Her fiance Nathan Mowers confessed to killing her inside their southwest Bakersfield home and then claimed to have dumped her body in a remote part of San Bernardino County.

  • He is expected to spend 11 years in prison but Nikooei's friends say that's not enough.

"Eleven years for killing a person, that seems kind of light" said Sandi Ward, Nikooei's friend.

Nikooei was from Iran and didn't have any relatives in the country but those who knew her considered her like family.

"I'm just glad she had people to stand up for her and she really didn't have anybody," said her friend Heather Duenham.

Nikooie worked several jobs while living in Bakersfield. Her last employment was at Deja Ve as an exotic dancer but that's not how her friends want her remembered.

"That's just kind of the path that she had to take. It's unfortunate but we are here to remember Azi as the mother, as the business woman because she really was a very intelligent business woman," said Duenham.

Nikooei is survived by her now 14-year-old son.
