UPS Apologizes For Calling Customer Terrorist

POSTED: 6:22 pm PST December 30, 2008
UPDATED: 11:59 am PST December 31, 2008

The Singh family contacted ABC 23 last week and told us of the incident where a United Parcel Service employee delivered a package to their home and wrote the word "Terrorist" for the signature. We were provided with the information that showed where a UPS employee entered the word terrorist next to the signed by column.

A UPS a spokesperson contacted ABC 23 and said they were sorry about the incident.

"We regret this incident and consider it inappropriate. Please be assured that UPS has strict policies about respecting diversity in the communities where we operate. UPS has addressed the matter with the employee who entered the information. Unfortunately, because it's a personnel matter, I can't tell you our specific actions or the details of our investigation, " said a UPS spokesperson.

The Singh family and the Sikh community said that the statement is fine but UPS should have responded with a published statement.

"It's good that they responded and apologize, but I think it would be better if they came out publicly on air and apologize for what happened," said Teg Sidhu, a friend of the family.

"I don't think that is enough. They should apologize in the media so nobody else does that. It is very unfortunate - it should not happen," said Nazar Sing Kooner, a Sikh community activist.

The victims said that this negative event could be used to educate the public on race relations.

"We are living in one community and everybody should be treated equal. Not as the racial factors as black, white, Sikhs, Hindus or Muslims. As long as we are living in the USA and abide by the rules, we should be treated as one community," said Anant Singh, the victim's son.

Two UPS managers personally went to the Singh home last week to apologize, but the victim was not home at the time. The family has not heard from UPS since.
