Buttonwillow Sheriff Substation Tagged Unsafe

The building is not up to current safety codes and in the event of a major earthquake, it could come crashing down.

The county had 143 un-reinforced masonry buildings on a list to be either rebuilt or demolished since 1981. Now there are only 13 buildings left, including the one at the substation. The Buttonwillow substation houses between 12 to 15 deputies.

"When it is scheduled to be demolished we will determine through the county process weather to build at that location or close to it. All those options are on the table, nothing has been decided. At this point no deputies have left the building they will continue to he housed there," said Marty Williamson, Kern County Undersheriff.

When the building is demolished, one temporary solution for the substation could be to combine it with another substation in North County, such as the Delano Substation.

The substation coverage area encompasses more than two thousand square miles. Officials said even if the move takes the substation out of town temporally, it will not effect response time. However some residents feel much safer if the station is close by.

"It depends on response time. If we need law enforcement assistance and it's critical emergency 911, how long will it take them to respond to a 911 call over here," said Mary Taylor, resident.

Department officials also said even if the building is moved temporally, deputies will still patrol in town.

"The service is going to remain the same. It will be just a matter of where we work. Although nothing is set in stone as far as moving or not, so we will wait and see, The residents of Buttonwillow will continue to be protected," said Sgt. Bobby Voth, Kern County Sheriff Dept.

Sheriff Youngblood said he does not want deputies to be housed in any other location other than in Buttonwillow during the temporary move. The final decision will be up to the county supervisors if and when the move takes place.
