UPDATED: 5:41 pm PDT August 18, 2009

Two men and a woman are under arrest Tuesday afternoon after police said one of them robbed a Fastrip and then led police on a high-speed chase ending with one of the passengers in a canal.

The Bakersfield Police Department told ABC23 that the robbery took place just before 11 a.m. Tuesday when Brent Cannady, 27, came into the Fastrip on Oswell Street in east Bakersfield, demanded money and drove off with Ned Pepper, 23, and Amberlee Nelson, 18, in a white Ford Taurus.

Police said the surveillance footage showed Cannady jumping over the counter and taking money from the cash register and was then chased off.

  • Cannady then got into the Taurus and took off down Highway 178, the BPD told ABC23.

Detectives following the car said they lost sight of it but another detective spotted the vehicle traveling westbound on Golden State Highway and followed the vehicle all the way to State Road and Olive Drive.

Pepper lost control of the vehicle and slammed into a truck driving school at the corner of State Road and Olive Drive, the BPD reported.

Nelson and Cannady took off but were immediately taken into custody, Nelson complained of pains due to the crash, police said.

Pepper took off on a foot chase and ended up diving into a canal, the BPD told ABC23.

Pepper hid in the canal until he finally gave up and was arrested by the BPD.

All three were arrested on charges of robbery and conspiracy.
