BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Friends of Jim and Deborah Harmon said their lives were filled with passion, passion for motorcycles and passion for helping others. The couple was instrumental in starting the Bakersfield Toy Run, which had been helping needy families for 25 years.Monday, there was a makeshift memorial set up for the couple at Renegade Classics on Buck Owens Boulevard. Deborah had worked there for about four years, sowing patches on motorcycle jackets. Workers said that people had been stopping by the store all day to give their condolences. Store owners set up a table out front with pictures and candles along with cards, so others could write down their goodbyes. The accident happened Saturday morning near Kernville. Jim Harmon, 58, was the president of the Bakersfield Toy Run, which collected toys and food for families in need. The CHP says both Harmon and his wife were on their motorcycle headed south on Sierra Way. Officers say 74-year-old Hazel Halloran was driving north on the same road when she lost control of her Buick and crashed into them head-on. Both were ejected from the bike.
Family says the couple was on their way to a weekend conference aimed at promoting motorcycle safety. Harmon was taken to Kern Valley Hospital where he died a few hours later, his wife was airlifted to Kern Medical Center where she died minutes before him. Halloran received minor injuries.Toy Run officials say that this year's run will go on as scheduled and will be dedicated in memory of the Harmons. Funeral arrangements for the couple are still pending. Monday night, members of the Bakersfield WidowMakers club will be meeting at Bikersfield Leather and Accessories to discuss a fundraiser ride to help cover the cost of the funeral.
