OILDALE, Calif. -- Oildale may be known for a lot of things, but one store specializes in all things Oildale. The store's theme is that it caters to the '08er. But as ABC 23 found out, you don't have to be from the 93308 zip code to appreciate the store. The '08er Clothing Shop has been open for more than a year and was borne out of an event that happens once every century. "The day 08-08-08 happens once every 100 years, and we wanted to represent Oildale during that event," said store owner Dave Christy.Christy printed the first shirt for Aug. 8, 2008, and couldn't keep that original design in stock. Everybody wanted one and then gave him some advice. "They told me that I needed to open a store that sold my T-shirts," said Christy.
The store sells T-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies for all sizes. Each shirt has either Oildale or '08 printed on it. Customers said that men and women can both find something for their '08er style. You don't have to live north of the river to buy a T-shirt, either. Jennifer Smith is a traveling nurse who lives in Texas and wanted to bring a piece of Oildale back with her."I'm not from here, but I was driving down Chester and thought how cool the store looked from the outside, so I decided to check it out. This store is very unique," said Smith. But what is not unique is how many customers from out of state bought an '08er shirt. There is even a map of the United States in the store that has a pin in every state an '08er shirt is being worn. The owners said he is thankful to the community for helping him keep the store open during the difficult economic times and is selling T-shirts at a reduced price to give back.
