OILDALE, Calif. -- The weakened economy has caused many businesses to shut their doors in recent years and, according to financial experts, small businesses need to be creative enough to keep customers coming back for more. And that's exactly what one business on North Chester is aiming for. Hotties Salon And Spa has what you may expect, everything from a manicurist, massage therapist, tanning booths and a hair dresser, but the owner Christie Hargrave said innovation is the key that will open the door of success."I'm thinking outside the box. My vision for this community is to offer as much a possible for the customer under one roof," said Hargrave.
The business is located in a building that used to be a doctor's offices. There are just about 20 rooms and in one of those rooms you will find a lingerie and costume shop."I applaud the small businesses that are innovative. We teach entrepreneurship at the university and in today's economic climate, the businesses that utilize innovation has a better chance of success," said John T. Emery, CSUB, dean of finance. But that's not all, Hargrave is planning on opening a tattoo shop shortly down the road and said there are still rooms available, she wants them all filled with new innovative business. The concept seems to be catching on with their customers who are looking for variety under one roof.According to government statistics, small businesses represent more than 99 percent of all employers, and employ more than half the private work force. Small business entrepreneurs create more than two out of every three new jobs and generate about 50 percent of the nation's gross domestic product.
