BAKERSFIELD, Calif -- You would think that somebody might think twice before they decided to embezzle from a gun dealer, but that is exactly what a former employee of Second Amendment Sports is accused of doing. In a search warrant obtained by ABC 23, investigators said Joylene McAvoy had worked at the gun shop as the bookkeeper for just under two years and during that time is accused of walking away with a large amount of money.McAvoy is accused of stealing more than $200,000 from the gun shop.
But it wasn't until after she left the company that the alleged crime was discovered. From the period between January 2007 until September 2008, the search warrant said McAvoy deposited large sums of checks into her personal account, funds that were were supposed to go to the shop's vendors.Last December, McAvoy told shop owner, Matthew Janes, that she was going to quit and start her own business.Janes told investigators that the new bookkeeper began to learn of the embezzlement as vendors began calling asking for their money.Janes told investigators that he had "total trust in her and her abilities as their business accountant." A manager at the gun shop told ABC 23 Thursdays that they have no comment. McAvoy has been charged with felony grand theft and is due back in court Friday morning.
