Older Brother Saves The Day

A northwest Bakersfield mother is counting her blessings Friday after a near-tragedy involving the family's fireplace. Her smallest son climbed into the fire and her older son came to the rescue. An accident like this is something every mom may fear, but is was the absence of fear that caused the quick actions of a sibling in distress.

Friday afternoon, 6-year-old Wyatt Parsons played with his 11-month-old little brother Tanner, but earlier this week things were very different.

The family had just put Tanner to bed and wanted to have a cozy quite evening at home and lit a fire. Within minutes Tanner had gotten out his bed and crawled to the living room where he climbed into the fireplace. Tanner's mom, Jennifer Parsons had just left the living room a felt the instant panic when she heard the screams.

"I saw my brother in the fire and grabbed him out. Then I dragged him far away from the fire until my mom came running," said Wyatt.

The family is also praising the efforts of the Grossman Burn Center and are thankful that they didn't have to travel to an out of town hospital to receive treatment.

"Even if it was for one person, to have the burn center here in Bakersfield was worth the money put into it. We would have had to travel to Fresno or Los Angeles to get the same top quality care," said Jennifer.

Family and friend are calling Wyatt a hero and say had he not gotten to his little brother, those burns could have be a lot worse and even possibly died.

Tanner received deep tissue, second degree burns on his hands and wrists with some minor burns to his face and has had two skin graft surgeries. He is expected to make a full recovery.
