BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Veterans Day isn't until Wednesday, but patriotism came early for one local elementary school. Veterans were honored Tuesday because Veterans Day is observed as a holiday at the Fruitvale School District. On Tuesday, the Columbia elementary students filled the school's auditorium, waving American flags in celebration of their love ones, and dozens of other brave men and women, who put their lives in danger to keep peace and freedom. With patriotic songs, and a student body salute, vets were praised for their commitment and dedication and last weeks tragedy in Ft. Hood made today's celebration more special to those in attendance.
To make the program more personal, students and faculty were asked to invite veterans to the program who are important in their lives. Thirty-five men and women representing most of the branches of the military, who have served and some who are still serving our country, stood proud.Educators wanted the students to understand and remember those who have served in previous wars, those who are serving today, and those who did not live to become veterans.
