The Department of Human Services has set up the program to give Christmas gifts to kids who are in foster care.Wednesday's grand opening came complete with some holiday songs sung by from a few kids who are in the foster care program. Santa came riding in a Kern County fire truck. Organizers said no holiday program would be complete without a visit from Santa, and none of the wishes could come true without the public 'shelp.
Nearly 700 children have sent their personal "wishes," which will be placed with the child's name and their age on the trees that line the walls of the cottage. All the presents will be delivered to the children by staff and volunteers. Organizers said without community support, many foster care kids may not even get a Christmas gift this season. This year, the Holiday Cottage is located at the Brimhall Square Market at the corner of Brimhall And Calloway. The shop is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and will run until Dec. 13.The mall owners have donated the space for the whole month and will cover all the operating expenses.
