Local Women Help Feed Hungry Pets

Pet Food Pantry Gains Momentum

The weakened economy has sparked a group of local women to start a nonprofit organization to help feed needy animals. The Bakersfield Pet Food Pantry distributes over one thousand pounds of pet food per month.

The program started with one woman who saw the need while helping the less fortunate in Oildale. Now the group has grown to over 25 volunteers who are dedicated to helping homebound seniors and low income community members by providing them with dog and cat food for their pets.

This small grassroots effort has grown in leaps and bounds since its inception last April. Over two and a half tons of pet food has been donated to needy pet owners.

“So many pets are being turned over to shelters because of the economy and if we can help them stay with their owner by giving them food, than we are doing our part,” said Cindy Frye, of the Bakersfield Pet Food Pantry.

Organizers said they are looking for the community's support, either by donating pet food through one of their four Barrel Buddy locations or donating a large storage facility to store the pet food.

The following local businesses have donated space outside of their stores for donation barrels:

Biscuits Boutique and Doggie Spa 1617 19th St. 321-9602

CLS Pets 3105 F St. 327-0321

Self Serve Pet Spa 2816 Calloway Dr. Ste. 103

Valley Feed 12905 Hageman 589-5885
