OILDALE, Calif. -- After posting a resume online, Juanita Bradshaw said she was targeted by an employment scam.According to fraud statistics, employment scams are one of the most popular scams on the Internet.Unemployment rates are through the roof and scammers are coming out of the woodwork to entice desperate job seekers.
Officials at the Better Business Bureau said scammers are going after people who are unemployed because those people may be desperate. The BBB warns consumers to never give out any personal information unless you can trust the company. The fictitious e-mail Bradshaw received, asked for the same kind of information a job seeker may encounter at a legitimate job interview; like Social Security number and background information.Industry analysis said fraudulent job postings have also become a headache for legitimate job sites like Monster.com, Careerbuilder.com and Craigslist.com.“I usually apply from two to three jobs per day online, that's why it sounded so realistic to me because I have been applying for these jobs,” said Bradshaw.Bradshaw said the offer seemed too good to be true and knew it was a scam. She then contacted the BBB and ABC 23.If you have been victimized by an employment scam, you can help prevent these types of incidents from recurring by reporting it to the Federal Trade Commission and the BBB.If you feel your personal information has been compromised, contact law enforcement, your finical institution and monitor your credit report.
