OILDALE, Calif. -- The weakened economy has caused two brothers to reach for a fresh start in business as jobs are scarce.Unemployment rate soars in Kern County to more than 17 percent. As the unemployment rate keeps climbing some economists say those who can be creative in a weak economy may come out on top or at least stay afloat. But many who are out of work north of the river said they continue to look for employment at job fairs as well as fill out applications. Colin Dorsey has been out of work for more than a year and a half and said prospects don't look good.
The unemployment rate in Oildale it is at 18 percent. But Cletus Howell is taking a chance in a weak economy and opening a new car wash."I'm a general contractor and a realtor, both have been hit hard in the economy, so I'm going back to the basics by opening a car wash. Of course I need to put food on the table, but I also want to do my part to help the community get back on its feet," said Howell. Business analyst said for some, an economic slowdown might be the best setting for a startup a business. What we need right now for people to be creative at take a chance. Business owners who can find that niche and service our community could be successful," said Russell Johnson of the North Of The River Chamber Of Commerce.Howell and his brother opened Hotrides car wash on North Chester three weeks ago and said they want to be part of the job solution in Oildale."What we are doing is going back to job restoration not job recreation. Instead of operating a automated car wash, we can help provide jobs by opening a hand wash. We want to add jobs not take them away," said Howell. The brother plans on opening a day spa next to the car wash in the near future and added they will be looking for licensed therapists once it gets going.
