One of Pope Benedict XVI's writings, "Spe Salvi," which means "On Christian Hope," provided the theme for the pope's U.S. visit, according to the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C.

The encyclical was issued by the pope on Nov. 30, 2007.

A study guide to the document is available on the Archdiocese of Washington's Web site.
