Farm Workers Get Free Health Screening
ARVIN, Calif. -- Dozens of farm workers were able to get preventive health screenings at no cost Thursday afternoon.
Provided by Clinica Sierra Vista, dentistry screenings along with check-ups for high blood pressure and diabetes were available to a group of several dozen workers at Nuez Farms.
"It's really good because there's so many people like me who don't know this is out there for them, and don't go to the doctor," said Juan Martinez as he was getting a dental check-up.
As the debate rages on over healthcare reform, it's important to ensure people who cannot afford coverage can still get healthcare, accoding to Bill Phelps with Clinica Sierra Vista.
It's hard enough to afford a doctor," said Joel Martinez, a field supervisor. "Even working 8 hours, we only make $64 a day, and it's even harder for those who can only work part-time."
Farm Workers are generally not in a position to see a doctor, Phelps said, despite being at higher risk for illness due to exposure to extreme heat and pesticides.
"The least we can do is provide some care for these people who provide the food that goes on our table," he said.
