Search, Rescue Crews Find Missing Bakersfield Man
Frey Was Found Alive, Well Near Cabin In Remote Area

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Search and rescue teams from five counties scoured a mountain top in San Luis Obispo County on Thursday, looking for a Bakersfield man.Larry Frey, 67, a prominent local farmer went hunting Wednesday with three friends on Branch Mountain just east of Soda Lake.After several hours, when he failed to return to a designated meeting spot, rescue crews were called in.
Search teams took off first thing Thursday morning, navigating their way to the top of Branch Mountain, searching for Frey.Sgt. Mark Maki, SLO search and rescue, said, “(Frey is an) avid hunter, excellent physical condition. He’s been hunting for 50 years. He’s very familiar and comfortable with surroundings."Each hunter was dropped off in their regular hunting spots but when Frey didn't return around noon, his friends began to look for him without any luck.Search and rescue teams from Kern County, SLO, Santa Barbara, Monterrey and Fresno Counties were on scene early Thursday morning along with several K-9 teams, four-wheel drive quads and men on horseback.It took crews well over an hour to reach the search area from the command post when officials requested some state assistance.Crews were spread out in what officials call a high probability area, downhill from his last location.The California National Guard Blackhawk helicopter was requested by San Luis Obispo County to aid in the search.Frey was found alive and well by a cabin in a remote area.
