Squad Putting Cheerful Spirit Into Mountain Communities
LAKE OF THE WOODS, Calif. -- A group of young girls has gotten together to bring some more pep to Frazier Mountain.
The Frazier Mountain Youth Cheer squad started in June, and is already turning heads.
They're a lot of fun," said Delorah Latham, the squad's coach. " They're all first-year members with no experience, so they're doing really good."
In addition to the first-place accolades the squad earned at the Frazier Park Fiesta Days, some of the girls are cheering for a cause.
Five of the members are raising money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and taking on extra rehearsals to perform with the San Diego Charger Girls at a game next month.
"I was really excited, but then my mom told me my cousin has cancer, so I really wanted to help him," Brittney Johnson, one of the cheerleaders, said. "It's very important for me."
"I'm looking forward to it and a little nervous about it, but we go down there and we practice and have fun," Mariah Moffett added.
Parents say they are encouraged by the squad's progress.
"Everybody's happy to see that there's another program for the girls up here," said April Herrera, a mom of one of the cheerleaders. "They work hard, and the girls definitely have the enthusiasm."
But in the drive to be number one, the squad of about 15 girls has already outgrown its practice area, the venerable Cuddy Hall in Lake of the Woods. The ceiling is so low at the hall, the squad practices its pyramids and tosses outdoors.
"It's why we're searching for a building," Latham said. "We're also searching right now for sponsors and a building they can practice in that's more convenient."
The girls from the squad will be performing during the halftime show at the Chargers-Raiders game on November 1. They will also be competing next month at a cheer competition at Magic Mountain.
