New Super Wal-Mart Opens, Goes Green

After years of legal battles, the new super Wal-Mart on Panama Lane is now open.

The project faced several legal setbacks after lawsuits were filed claiming the store would threaten other businesses in the area.

  • Officials said the store has already been a positive force in the community -- creating more than 400 jobs.

    "The applicant pool has been pretty amazing, we've had up to 1,200 applications for one job which is pretty incredible," said Harry Fenske, the store manager.

    Fenske said they have a lot more to offer to Bakersfield.

    The five-acre retailer is being called a green store as officials have added energy efficient lights and plumbing along with less water consumption.
