FRAZIER PARK, Calif. -- The suspicious death of a resident could be connected to several 911 calls, reporting a man screaming for help, made the night before the victim was found dead. The tapes, obtained Friday by ABC 23, are from resident Mary DeMaio, in which she says she heard a man screaming for help inside Cuddy Creek.DeMaio and other residents believe the man crying for help was Jukka Hellsten, who was found dead by two young men the next morning.
Her call was one of several that residents made the night of November 2, less than 14 hours before Hellsten, 42, was found dead in Cuddy Creek, she said.DeMaio, who called 911 at around 8:30 p.m., said the screaming was audible for about ten minutes, then faded away before authorities began to search the creek and the surrounding area."There should have been a quicker response," DeMaio said. But Sheriff's deputies, who arrived on-scene around 8:45 p.m. that night, found no disturbance. An autopsy performed after Hellsten's body was found indicated he suffered blunt force trauma, but was inconclusive as to whether that was caused by a 30 to 40-foot fall or a deadly assault.Detectives are waiting for the results of toxicology tests to determine if Hellsten's death was a homicide or accidental, according to Ray Pruitt, a Sheriff's department representative. Those results are not expected for another few weeks. But DeMaio says she spoke with an investigator who told her, "I don't believe in consequences," perhaps indicating that the screams she heard are indeed connected to Hellsten's death.Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff's department at (661)245-3440.Frazier Park 911 Taped Call
