Local Firefighter Suspected In Fatal DUI Crash

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Police said that a Kern County firefighter was driving under the influence and allegedly ran a red light, causing a crash that killed one.Over 1,000 southwest residents were without power Tuesday night following a fatal two-car crash.Police said the crash severed a phone pole and caused a fire in one of the cars.

Panama And Ashe Fatal - UpdateThe phone pole was left dangling in the air, held up by what PG&E called a live wire.The Bakersfield Police Department said a gray Hyundai and red Ford pickup truck were the two vehicles involved in the accident.Firefighter Mitchell Green was driving the pickup truck and hit the turning Hyundai, according to the BPD.Witnesses told ABC23 that Green had run a red light and slammed into the Hyundai.Green was pulled out of the truck and taken to a nearby hospital where he is listed in critical condition.Michaela Maxwell, 15, who was the driver of the Hyundai was taken to Kern Medical Center with minor to moderate injuries.Michaela is a sophmore at Independence High School.Her mother, Michelle Marie Maxwell, 41, died at the scene.
Police said that Green was driving under the influence and will be charged once treated at KMC.ABC23 learned that Green has been transported to the Community Regional Burn Center in Fresno.BPD officials added with the downed power lines, traffic was blocked off from the Panama Lane and Ashe Road intersection.The areas affected were North of Panama Lane to Harris Road.Also Buena Vista Road stretching to Stine Road was without power.
