20 cats were found dead in a house in Arvin, according to the Kern County Fire Department.

On Friday around 9 a.m., the KCFD and animal control arrived at a home in the 25000 block of Judith Street in Arvin after reports of a fire to find 20 dead cats in the home.

ABC23 spoke with the homeowner, Joy Kennedy, who said that she's an animal rescuer.

Raw Interview With Joy Kennedy

Kennedy told ABC23 that she was doing her daily morning duties when a road worker who was paving the street outside her home, franticly knocked on her door telling her that there was a fire in her home.

Kennedy said she would've never known there was a fire if it wasn't for that worker.

Kennedy said that she's been rescuing animals for nearly 4 years now.

Fire crews said that unfortunately there were 20 cats in the house that did not survive the fire. They said three were actually rescued and three were taken to a veterinarian.

Guy Shaw, Director of Animal control said that conditions seemed normal; though animal control did cite Kennedy for minor issues.

Shaw said that they'll give her some time to meet the demands of the citations.

Kennedy has not been charged.
