ARVIN, Calif. -- Thousands of dollars-worth of unused workout equipment now sits in the new fitness room at Arvin High School, thanks to a generous donation from two former students. For Manpreet and Jaspreet Dhillon, brothers who graduated from Arvin High School ten years ago, donating an entire room of fitness equipment was the least they could do to give back to their alma mater."We've been given so much by this community that this is the least we could do for the students," Manpreet Dhillon said. "Hopefully it's something they can take with them for the rest of their lives."
Manpreet Dhillon is a pharmacist, while his brother Jaspreet works in real estate. They recently tried to start a new venture by opening a gym in Lamont, but the plans fell through after they acquired all the equipment. When that happened, Ralph Gonzales, the high school's athletic director, received a phone call he never expected."It was almost unbelievable because usually when someone calls about donations, it might be a few dumbbells or bars," Gonzales recalls. The school had been trying to raise money for new workout equipment for years to no avail, Blanca Cavazos, the school's principal, said."This is virtually a new gym, and we're extremely proud to be the recipients of something so amazing." Gonzales added. The room includes free weights and medicine balls, as well as cardio equipment and weight machines targeting every muscle group, allowing students to get fit."I used to come in during zero period and work out because I loved working out," Jaspreet Dhillon said. "It changed our lives. We're a lot more confident now because of working out."The brothers say there wasn't a second thought given to selling off the equipment. They just wanted to give students an opportunity to stay in shape since there is not much in the way of fitness equipment outside of school."The opportunities we had to stay fit while we were here was just what we had at the gym," Manpreet Dhillon said. "By donating the equipment to the school, the students will be able to benefit from a variety of equipment."Arvin's athletes are already using the equipment in their training for the spring sports. In the coming school year, they'll be available to students in P.E. classes and for after-school workouts.
