PINE MOUNTAIN CLUB, Calif. -- It can be easy to miss the Pine Mountain Learning Center if you don't know where to look, but thanks to a generous gift to the website DonorsChoose.org, the school of 85 students off Cerro Noroeste Road is not going unnoticed. The charter school west of Pine Mountain Club was one of 50 in Kern County to receive part of a $1.3 million donation made by Hilda Yao, the executive director of the Claire Giannini Foundation, based in San Francisco.Emily Lee, the 4th through 6th grade teacher, had been seeking donations for a portable Bose sound system and three iPod Touch devices to help kids learn about music and the sounds of nature in the Los Padres National Forest around them.
She was losing hope that her requests would go unfunded, but then the gift happened, which came as a welcome surprise, she said.114 projects at the 50 Kern County schools were funded for a total of around $90,000, representatives from DonorsChoose.org said.Even with the gift, there are still requests for donations to help local classrooms, including more than 20 new ones in Kern County.
