Retrace Civil Rights In Arkansas

State Played Role In Civil War And Civil Rights Movement

Arkansas offers visitors the chance to look back at its role in American history -- from the Civil War to the Civil Rights movement to the presidency of Bill Clinton.

Civil War Sites
Visitors to Arkansas can see Civil War battlegrounds. The battles of Pea Ridge, Prairie Grove and Helena all took place in Arkansas.

20th Century History Landmarks
Tourists can retrace Arkansas' role in American history. In 1957, Little Rock Central High School was at the center of the Civil Rights movement when nine African-American teenagers attended the previously all-white school.

Caves
Families can take a trip underground and explore the limestone caves of the Ozarks. There are nearly 2,000 caves in Arkansas, and eight of them offer tours to the public. While venturing through the caves visitors may see streams and lakes, crystals and many formations.

Clinton Presidential Center
Located in Little Rock is the Clinton Presidential Center, which gives visitors a closer look at President Bill Clinton -- who grew up in Arkansas -- and his former life in the White House. The center houses the largest archival collection in American presidential history. It also allows visitors to see a copy of the Oval Office; learn about the Clintons' dog, Buddy, and their cat, Socks; and see a collection of gifts that were given to the former U.S. president and his wife.

Peabody Hotel
Located in Little Rock, the Peabody Hotel offers guests the opportunity to watch the March of the Peabody Ducks. Each day at 11 a.m., a group of ducks marches on a red carpet through the hotel lobby and then dives into the hotel's fountain, where the ducks will remain for most of the day. At 5 p.m., the ducks exit the fountain and return to their "duck palace" for the evening.
