Nation's Oldest Inn Awaits In NM

Travelers Stay At Mansions, Haciendas, Retreats

Victorian mansions, haciendas and tranquil retreats are available for every type of New Mexico vacation.

Bottger Mansion of Old Town in Albuquerque is a turn-of-the-century Victorian mansion. This bed and breakfast offers elegant décor with Southwestern hospitality. Relax in the courtyard and enjoy the shade from the giant 100-year-old Chinese elm trees. Museums, shops, restaurants and parks are just steps away. A gourmet breakfast is offered every morning and guests can enjoy afternoon tea in the parlor.

The La Hacienda Grande in Bernalillo is a buckskin-colored inn said to be the oldest inn in the country. Spanish explorers as far back as 1541 have stayed in the adobe fort. There are six spacious rooms with private baths, a dining room and covered patio that looks out onto a courtyard for guests to enjoy. A full breakfast is available every morning. This inn is also pet-friendly.

The Moon and Mountain Retreat and Studio in Jemez Springs is nestled on the Jemez River and offers beautiful river and mountain views. This retreat spot caters to creative and spiritual people. There are no required retreat workshops but there is a guided hike up Virgin Mesa offered. Artists often enjoy capturing the breathtaking views and writers can find their words in the tranquil setting. If you are looking for a completely stress-free, peaceful place to stay, this is the place for you.

Enchanted Trails RV Park and Trading Post sits on historic Route 66 overlooking Albuquerque. It sits between three extinct volcanoes on a desert mesa. The park has full, pull-through hook-up sites, water, electric and amp sites and wireless Internet. Restrooms, a pool, spa and laundry facilities are also on site. The Trading Post offers Native American crafts, Southwestern foods and fun gadgets.

The Shaffer Hotel in Mountainair is a registered national historic site and one of the few pueblo art deco buildings in existence. It is said that the original owner’s ghost roams the halls. This hotel offers modern accommodations with historical elegance. All of the rooms are furnished with antique furniture; some of the bathrooms have claw-foot tubs. There is also a billiard and game room, exercise room, covered patio and restaurant on site.
