Two Suspects Arrested In Connection With Parrott Killings

Teens Held In 'Random Act Of Violence,' Police Say

POSTED: 10:15 am PST November 24, 2008
UPDATED: 1:36 pm PST November 25, 2008

Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the slaying of an elderly southwest Bakersfield couple, according to the Bakersfield Police Department.

On Sunday around midnight, the BPD received a phone call reporting that a 17-year-old male admitted to being involved in the homicides. Later on Sunday, the 17-year-old was brought in to the police department for questioning and was later arrested. Detectives searched the suspect’s home where they found property that had been taken from the Parrott's home, according to the police report.

Early Monday morning, detectives received more information that led to the identification of the second suspect, the nephew of the 17-year-old. The nephew, 16, was arrested at a residence in the city of Whittier, Calif., according to the police report.

According to police reports, while searching the second suspect's home in Moreno Valley, detectives located more stolen property that belonged to the Parrotts.

At a press conference Monday, detectives said they believe the Parrotts' killings in August were a random act of violence.

"We believe that the reason they went into this area is because number one it was not a very well-lit area, there were no vehicles in the driveway and it was dark in the area that led them to that particular residence," said Lt. Hajir Nuriddin of the Bakersfield Police Department.

Neighbors said getting word of the arrests finally gives them closure.

"I'm relieved that they actually caught somebody. Of course we don't know if they are the people that did it or not. But I'm still really saddened by their death. I still think that Joe is going to come out and talk to me and joke," said neighbor Jeff Lewis.

Both suspects have been booked into Kern County Juvenile Hall under suspicion of murder, burglary, robbery and conspiracy.
