BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Trying to keep cool this summer can mean a higher energy bill, but it doesn't have to.There are hundreds of eco-friendly and energy-efficient items on the market today. Starting off with the basics around your home, you can start saving on your energy bill now.The experts at Home Depot on Gosford Road in the southwest offered up some tips on saving money and the environment at the same time.
Lew Hunter, a department supervisor at Home Depot, said first thing you need to do is check your air filters. The rule is if you hold it up and can't see through it, then it needs to be replaced. A pack of air filters will run you a few dollars.Next, Hunter said you want to switch your thermostat to a digital one. Many electric companies offer rebates if you purchase one. When it comes to setting the temperature, raise it to 79 degrees when you're home and 85 when you're not home.Insulating your attic and walls is another way to keep the cool air in and the hot air out. Hunter said if your home is well insulated, you may not have to run your air at all.Spending a little as $5 for window and door sealant can save you hundreds in the long run, either silicone or foam can be used. And just like car window tinting, there is a film on the market you can put on your home's windows that reflect 72 percent of the sun's heat.Other tips, switch to energy-saving lights, and motion-sensored lights outside. Many of these items are eligible for tax credit rebate. Call your electric company to find out what items apply.
