BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- They may be packaged as mini, but they pack a lot of calories. Mini foods are the hottest fast food trend right now.Stacy Eldridge, a dietitian for Kaiser Permanente, said don't let things in small packages fool you."That can throw people off. For example the Jack in the Box Mini Sirloin burgers, they can be as high as 800 calories for a serving, almost 30 grams of fat. That's not mini. That's not a mini meal," said Stacy Eldridge.
ABC 23 wanted to compare the calorie and fat content between Jack in the Box's Mini Chicken Buffalo Burgers and a Jumbo Jack. The mini burgers have a total 738 calories and 27 grams of fat, whereas the Jumbo Jack has 578 calories and 33 grams of fat."People need to think of the snack products as meals, not as snacks because they have adequate calories for meals," said Eldridge. What is considered a snack? Eldridge said anything with no more than 250 calories. She said many fast food restaurants now offer a menu for the more health conscious cliental.Like the McDonald's snack wraps, Eldridge said choosing grilled chicken instead of fried and low fat sauce is a healthy snack. But if you feel like you need to splurge on that burger, Eldridge said ask for it without mayonnaise. Just doing that can save you 150 calories and 15 to 20 grams of fat.
