Police Report: Attack Suspect Displayed Violence Before

More details have emerged into last months alleged patient attack on a staff member at a southwest head trauma rehabilitation center.

ABC 23 obtained the police report which detailed what happened the day rehab assistant Delia Chavez, 54, was attacked in an apartment at the Centre for Neuro Skills on Gosford Road.

Detectives said the alleged attacker, Dustin Fabro, 18, is no stranger to violence.

"Fabro had been involved in a moped accident on Feb. 16, 2008, in Hawaii where he lived, and suffered a head injury. Following the accident he began to exhibit aggressive and angry outbursts where he had physically assaulted others," according to the police report.

Detectives went on to say Fabro's family became fearful of him so they decided to send him to the Centre for Neuro Skills for treatment.

The facility treats people suffering from neurological disorders, generally a result from some kind of head trauma.

Fabro arrived at the facility May 27, according to the police report. Twelve days later, detectives said Fabro could be seen attacking Chavez on surveillance video. This is what detectives said they saw.

"The occupant of the room, Dustin Fabro, strike Chavez around 0800 hours. After Fabro struck Chavez, the two fell out of view of the camera," detectives said."

Soon after detectives said Fabro was seen leaving the apartment.

Hours later, police said a maid who had known Chavez for 17 years found her lying on her stomach in a pool of her own blood. Her injuries so severe she was unrecognizable.

Chavez suffered broken facial bones, cracked ribs, a collapsed lung and bleeding to the brain.

Chavez' family tells ABC 23 she has since been released from the hospital and is currently at a care facility recovering.

Fabro has pled not guilty to two charges; assault with a deadly weapon and assault with great bodily injury.

He will be in court next week to see if he is eligible to receive services from Kern Regional Center, and is still awaiting a competency hearing.
