BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- The government said she's dead, but she's still alive and it's a mix-up that is creating a medical nightmare.Sheila Lucas got news that would shock anybody after she tried to fill her prescription earlier this week. She was told she had been dropped from her insurance because Medicare had declared her dead.Ever since she received the shocking news, Lucas has been locked away in her apartment living in fear she may run out of the medicines she depends on.
"The important ones, I'm going to be out of completely by next Monday or Tuesday. And then they will probably come in and take all my equipment, my oxygen tank, breathing equipment I have to have at bedtime. They will probably come in and take all that," said Lucas.Lucas' Medicare, Social Security and in home services has since been cut off. This week Lucas got a letter in the mail stating her death and offered condolences to her family.Lucas who is wheelchair bound, has spent the past few days making phone calls trying to figure out how this could happen."I've asked them where this came from, who did it? They won't tell me anything. All they will do is give me the death notice of the day I died, June 23," said Lucas.Nearly one month later, Lucas was notified of her supposed death. Now she's afraid by the time this gets figured out, it'll be too late."Oh, it will get taken care of just give it time. It should be five days. One lady told me maybe 30 days. I told her I'm not going to be here in 30 days if I don't get my medicine, I will be dead," said Lucas.ABC 23 called Medicare about this situation but didn't hear back from them.ABC 23 then put a call in to Congressman Kevin McCarthy's office and made them aware of Lucas' situation. They said they would give her a call. A few hours later, Lucas told ABC 23 his office did contact her and she has since been contacted by Social Security who is giving her a check and the pharmacy will make sure she has medicine until this is figured out.
