BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A man is dead and the man who shot him is hospitalized after what police said was a break-in fueled by drugs. The shooting took place just after 11 p.m. Thursday, when police say that two men broke into an apartment and was confronted by one of the residents.Sgt.Greg Terry of the Bakersfield Police Department said, “We contacted the victim and was told that he and his wife were in the apartment when two suspects forced entry. There was a confrontation between this victim and the suspects, there was an exchange of gunfire inside the apartment during which the victim was shot and it appears the suspect was shot during that time as well."
Police said they found the resident outside the apartment suffering from two gunshot wounds to his upper torso. Police said one of the two suspects who broke in, 21-year-old Roosevelt Mitchell, was dead inside one of the bedrooms with a gun in his hand.According to the Kern County Superior court, Mitchell had prior convictions. He was convicted of burglary, receiving stolen property and participating in a street gang. While people living in the neighborhood said the area has been plagued by violence and break-ins lately, Police said the break-in was not random.Det. Mary DeGeare of the BPD, said, “We don't believe that the victim and the intruder knew each other personally, however the investigation suggests there was narcotics activity taking place in the home and that was the motivation of the robbery."One of the neighbors who spoke to ABC23 said, "We've seen a lot of traffic come out of that particular apartment, so we've been concerned about that."The resident that was shot, whose identity has not been released, is said to make a full recovery.Police are still looking for the second man.The BPD is asking anyone with information to call their secret witness hotline at 322-4040.
