Woman Feels Burned By Tanning Salon

POSTED: 6:17 pm PDT September 1, 2009
UPDATED: 8:14 am PDT September 2, 2009

A Bakersfield woman is claiming she had been burned by a Southwest tanning salon after they closed their doors without warning.

Paula Pittman has been a regular at Bahama Cove Tanning Salon for the past five years. She said she was told if she bought a bottle of tanning lotion she would get a month's worth of free tanning.

She bought the $22 bottle on Saturday, but when she came back on Sunday to use a free tan, she found the business was out of business.

"I take my tanning serious. I know $22 isn't that much, but it's the economy and it's just the idea of how they did us. For us coming here for so many years, we could have owned this place," said Pittman.

A sign stating, "Lost our lease, forced to vacate, hope to see you at our new location," is now posted in the window.

But there were no other signs posted indicating where the new location would be.

Pittman said she saw the owners moving things out of the business on Monday but when they saw her, they ran inside.

"We asked their son yesterday if there would be a new location and he said no," she said.

ABC 23 called the tanning salon Tuesday but the phone number had already been disconnected. ABC 23 also tried contacting the property management company but never heard back from them.

While Pittman said it would be nice to get her money back, a simple I'm sorry would do.

"At least apologize to us, instead of running in and hiding like a little rat would do," she said.
