BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- ABC23 first brought you a story two weeks ago about dog owners fed up with a relentless vandal who has tried to cut off the water supply at a popular southwest dog park. Now a local business has stepped forward to help.
Kroll Dog Park is a playground for dozens of dogs a day, but the only water source is outside the park which was vandalized in the past weeks.Dog owners want a permanent drinking fountain inside the park but the city said it would need to raise the thousands of dollars it would cost.A local pet-sitting business got the ball rolling."It's very important,” said Jim Jones, a dog owner. “The dogs run and play and have a good time and they're not able to sweat so they're panting and without fresh water it could be a problem."A few dog owners took it upon themselves to put out water buckets but they kept getting stolen.Somebody also put a lock on the water spigot located outside the park. After hearing about the problems, local pet sitting business Fetch Pet Care is now trying to round up the community to get fresh water flowing inside the park."People who put the buckets of water out there, it is a labor of love, but it hurts so much to see that labor on daily if not weekly basis,” said dog owner Marve Larson. “We feel the solution is to definitely have a permanent water fountain put out there."The fountain comes with a $6,000 price tag, money the city said it doesn’t have and the community would need to raise on their own.Fetch Pet Care created a Web site where people can donate.Visit www.thirstykrolldogs.com for more information.
