UPDATED: 4:07 am PST November 5, 2009

California State University, Bakersfield’s Kegley Institute of Ethics will host Vejas Liulevicius, professor of history at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, who will speak about “Medicine in Nazi Ideology and Practice.”

The lecture will be held in the Student Union multipurpose room on Thursday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m.

Liulevicius’ discussion at CSUB will focus on a range of questions regarding Nazi medical practices, including the infamous experiments in concentration camps and the worldview behind Nazi medical policy and redefinition of the role of doctors in society.

He will also point to the impacts of this history on contemporary U.S. medical practice, including experimentation and informed consent.

Specializing in modern German history, Liulevicius’ work focuses on German relations with Eastern Europe.

He is best known for his lectures through The Teaching Company,a firm that encourages lifelong learning by offering audio courses from professors at leading colleges and universities. Liulevicius has three taped lectures that are part of the company’s “Great Courses Series.”

The lecture is co-sponsored by Kern Medical Center and Bakersfield College’s Norman Levan Institute for Lifelong Learning. The event is free and open to the public, with free parking in lot K after 6 p.m. For more information, visit www.csub.edu/kie or call the Kegley Institute at (661) 654-2555.
