BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Adjusting to life outside of the military can be trying for many veterans looking to get an education. But now veteran students attending Cal State Bakersfield have somewhere and somebody to turn to.The Student Veterans Organization was started this past summer after student and Army veteran Anita Orr, saw there was a need for extra support on campus."We provide assistance and support for veterans who are getting out of the service and want a place to feel comfortable and relate to other veterans," said Orr.
Orr served four years in the Army, three of those years in South Korea. She met her husband Garrion Orr who served five years in the Army at Fort Lewis in Washington State. After the couple were discharged from active duty Anita said they wanted to be closer to her family who live in California as well as further their education. After researching colleges, they decided to attend CSUB."He's my best friend and we just provide a lot of support for each other. Getting out was easy because I had someone there for me to help me through the transition and someone who knew what I was going through," said Anita.Even though Anita had her husband to look to, she saw other students didn't have the same support. She teamed up with the VA coordinator on campus and started the Student Veterans Organization."A lot of people have been here for a couple years now and they thought it would never be started or they were happy that it just got started, so it's been a good reaction," said Garrion. The group marched for the first time at the Veterans Day parade Wednesday. As the crowd cheered and waved the veterans on, student veteran Billy Stafford said it was a day that brought back memories of his friends who didn't make it home."To see all the generations of people that have served this country, made it capable for all of us to have the freedoms that we have, I'm really proud to be a part of it," said Stafford.Anita and Garrion will be graduating at the end of the month, but Anita said she feels confident the organization will stay strong even when she is gone.
