BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A local Marine who was severely injured while on duty will be receiving the home he's been waiting years for.It was a dream home that has finally come to life. And the timing couldn't be more perfect."It's symbolic in a way, someone said earlier, 'It is a Veterans Day gift,' it's a hell of a gift," said Marine Cpl. Evan Morgan.
The gift was from "Home For Our Troops." The nonprofit organization provides specially adapted homes for service men and women who were severely injured during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.Morgan lost both of his legs and the sight in his right eye after a roadside bomb exploded while he was on his second tour of duty in Iraq. The 2,200 sq. ft. home built by general contractor Dave Packer in the Oaks is outfitted with everything Morgan needs to live comfortably, from automatic doors to wood flooring so he can get around with his wheelchair with ease.Morgan's wife Jillian, said they can't wait to finally get settled into their new neighborhood."It's been a long time, it's been about two years in the works, so we are just so excited," she said. And from day one, volunteers have gone above and beyond to make this project possible."These guys are our heroes and the sacrifice that they and their family has given for this community and this country is beyond belief. We owe everything to them," said volunteer Walt Newport of the Wounded Heroes Fund."It's been amazing, definitely you can feel the support when you are someone like me, or it doesn't necessarily have to be an injured veteran, just any veteran really. Bakersfield is very supportive of the troops and they show it, it's not just talk," said Evan.Evan and his family will be presented the home during a key ceremony this Saturday.
