Nearly 100 Cars, Homes Targeted By Vandals

Group Armed With BB Guns Go On Shooting Spree Over Weekend

Vandals armed with a BB gun went on shooting spree over the weekend in the southwest, damaging close to 100 cars and homes, according to police.

Glass still lined the street on Posada Avenue Monday morning. At least a dozen cars were hit on this street alone.

Dennis Hughes has lived in the neighborhood for 34 years, and was surprised to find the back window of his car shot out Sunday.

"Shock then anger, the idea that somebody would do it. I would feel better if they had broken in and taken something rather than just do it out of meanness," he said.

Police believe a group of juveniles are responsible for the damage. Police said the group targeted homes and cars around the southwest starting Saturday evening up until early Monday morning.

Becky Sheldon found the driver-side window of her truck broken out. She said she thinks somebody used a brick or bat by the way the window broke.

Sheldon has been living in the neighborhood for seven years, and said crime is increasing.

"When we first moved into the neighborhood everyone was just so nice and owned their own homes. But with this foreclosure thing we are getting more renters in and homes are getting empty and we have more people driving through the neighborhood that don't belong here, and it's getting real scary," she said.

One SUV has three of its windows shot out, costing the owners $800 to fix.

Leo Merjil's daughter's truck was parked on the street when the vandals shot out her window.

Merjil said he will park his cars in the driveway from now on.

"It's still frightening that you can't go to sleep at night time comfortably, and worry about your vehicles out here being vandalized by some crazy clown that wants to cause problems," he said.

Police have not made any arrests. If you have any suspect information or vehicle description you are being asked to contact the BPD at 327-7111.
