Black History Month Kickoff At CSUB

POSTED: 4:15 pm PST January 28, 2010

An evening of fellowship, entertainment and history signaling the beginning of Black History Month will take place Monday, Feb. 1, at 6 p.m. in the Stockdale Room at California State University, Bakersfield.

The event will include a keynote address by Vandana Kohli, CSUB sociology professor, titled "African Diaspora: Past, Present and Future." The African Diaspora refers to the mass migration of Africans to other parts of the globe. Starting in the late 15th century, many Africans were forced to the Americas and Europe as a result of the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

Karla Young, an event organizer, said the evening should provide audiences with a unique African-American perspective and hopes “people understand the history of the African Diaspora and the significance of celebrating Black History Month.”

The kickoff event is one of many activities hosted by CSUB clubs and community organizations during the month of February.

Admission is free and open to the public and refreshments will be provided.
