Homeowner Fires At Intruder, Keeps Him In Bathroom

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Police arrested a man who they said took the homeowner's rifle and hid in the bathroom while the homeowner was looking for him.Around 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Bakersfield Police Officers were dispatched to a home in the 1400 block Ivan Avenue, with the homeowner detaining the suspect at gunpoint.Police said that John Jenaro Garner, 28, had entered the residence through an open window, and located a rifle stored in a closet.
Garner went upstairs with the firearm, Sgt. Mary DeGeare said.While Garner rummaged the upstairs area, the homeowner told police that he heard noises upstairs and armed himself with his handgun.The homeowner told police that he then went upstairs and found Garner hiding inside the upstairs bathroom.When the homeowner pushed open the bathroom door, he said he saw Garner and instinctively fired his revolver above Garner’s head to scare him, DeGeare said.Police said Garner dropped the rifle and dropped to the floor until officers arrived.Garner was found to be in possession of suspected illicit drugs and had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant, DeGeare said.Garner was arrested on numerous charges and the warrant.
