TRIPLE CROWN

Big Brown To Resume Steroid Injections

Owner Says Desormeaux Will Remain Colt's Jockey

Big Brown will continue to be ridden by Kent Desormeaux and will resume his steroids injections, members of the colt's team told the New York Times on Tuesday.

The colt's trainer blamed Desormeaux on Monday for the Triple Crown contender's last-place finish in the Belmont Stakes, but one of Big Brown's owners, Michael Iavarone, said the jockey will keep riding the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner.

"As far as I am concerned, there will be no changes," Iavarone told the Times. "I don't think anybody was happy with the ride, including Kent. But I'm not going to sit here and say that's the reason why we couldn't keep up with those horses. It had to be one element of many. Unless we find something wrong with the horse over the next few days, everything else is speculation."

ESPN reported that Big Brown's trainer, Rick Dutrow, met with Desormeaux on Wednesday. Dutrow told the sports network that the two were "back on target."

"I just feel better because he came by to talk about (the Belmont ride)," Dutrow told ESPN.

The meeting came two days after Dutrow questioned Desormeaux's decisions in the Belmont Stakes.

Big Brown ran near the front of the pack for most of the 1 1/2-mile race before Desormeaux eased him up. The jockey said that the colt wasn't responding to his urging, but Dutrow told the Daily Racing Forum that Big Brown was healthy and blamed the loss on Desormeaux's decisions during the race.

"I'm sure (Big Brown) didn't have any idea what the hell was going on going into the first turn the way (Desormeaux) was switching him all over the damn track," Dutrow told the Daily Racing Forum. "I don't know what he was doing."

Desormeaux defended his ride by saying that he planned to go to the lead, but Big Brown slipped coming out of the gate.

Dutrow maintained to the Times that Big Brown was well prepared for the Belmont and said tests have revealed no physical problems.

The trainer, who admitted to giving his horses monthly injections of the anabolic steroid Winstrol -- which is legal in most states that participate in horse racing, including the three states that host the Triple Crown races -- did reveal before the Belmont that he last injected Big Brown with the steroid on April 15. But Dutrow told the newspaper on Tuesday that he would resume giving the horse injections, starting again on Sunday.

But Dutrow also told the Times that he didn't think the lack of steroids injections contributed to Big Brown's loss in the Belmont Stakes.
